THE PINE LEAF BOYS

Set to storm the UK in 2008, exclusively through Access All Areas.

The new generation of energetic Cajun musicians from Louisiana, The Pine Leaf Boys play authentic, traditional Cajun, Creole and zydeco dance-hall music, adding their own distinctive updates. The youngest band ever to sign to Arhoolie Records, their music spans rocking two-steps, stirring waltzes and raunchy Creole Blues, introducing new and young audiences to the unique sounds of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana.

"...Incredibly fresh and resoundingly vibrant."

Nick Pittman, Times of Acadiana

"The Pine Leaf Boys play Cajun/Zydeco music like no other twentysomethings we've ever heard. Musical polygamists, they frequently swap accordions, guitars, fiddles midshow and sound good no matter who is playing what."
Metro Santa Cruz

Wilson Savoy, accordion, fiddle & vocals, has known Cajun music since he was a young child growing up on a farm near Eunice, Louisiana. At the age of 15, Wilson’s father Marc built him an accordion from a Sassafras tree that was planted the same day his grandfather was born, and died the same year as his grandfather. He is inspired by Amédé Ardoin, Iry LeJeune, Lawrence Walker and his father but enjoys and continues to be influenced by old and modern Cajun, Soul, and Blues ranging from traditional Cajun to Ray Charles/Jerry Lee Lewis piano styles.

Cedric Watson, fiddle, accordion & vocals, has studied les veilles styles of Canray Fontenot and Bébé Carriere. Cedric lives, breathes, and eats Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music and introduces a heap of new arrangements and original songs to the group, adding new energy and style to the Pine Leaf Boys and more than carrying his weight by playing the accordion, drums, and guitar. His fantastic interpretations of melody and master improvisational skills are untouched by any Creole fiddler today.

Drew Simon, drums, accordion & vocals, was raised in Lafayette, Louisiana and began his musical career as a young boy playing drums with his brother in a local band named "Acadien". He is also a fantastic vocalist and has been influenced greatly by Phillip Alleman, the Balfa Brothers, and Lawrence Walker.

Jon Bertrand, guitars, was raised in the thriving hub of Jeff Davis Parish that is Pine Island or Crapeauville where he began life as a cowboy. Before moving the PLBs he was touring with the Lost Bayou Ramblers. His major influences in life are Cory McCauley, Harry Trahan, the Hackberry Ramblers, Iry LeJeune, Austin Pitre, and Sonny Meaux.

Blake Miller, guitar & bass, grew up in the humble town of Iota. Blake began playing accordion at a very young age and supernaturally became fluent on the 10-button box. Limited by the diatonic squeeze box, Blake shifted his focus to the fiddle and, "practiced fiddle for hours a day while his accordion sat on the shelf," according to his dad, Brünò. He soon became renowned as the 'sought-after' musician of Louisiana for accordion, fiddle, and rhythm/lead guitar and now adds a new dynamic to the Pine Leaf Boys as a rhythm machine.

As well as concerts, The Pine Leaf Boys offer a wide range of workshops, including:
Creole/Cajun Rhythms in Louisiana, Accordion, and French Through Song (how to learn French by learning Cajun song) led by Wilson;
Twin Fiddles in Louisiana, by Wilson and Cedric;
Triple Fiddle Harmonies, by Wilson, Cedric and Blake;
Jurers (old style rhythmic singing, African influenced, no instruments, only using hands as percussion), Old Cajun/Creole Ballads, complete with history and meaning of the songs. Led by Cedric;
Cajun Dance Workshops, guaranteed to have everyone up on their feet, covering the waltz, the two-step and the twists and turns of the Jitterbug, led by Cajun Style;
And as a special treat, "A Taste of Cajun". An optional demonstration of cooking a genuine Cajun Jambalaya. Delicious!
